Dan Haifley has been Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey, a free ocean science and ecology program for school-aged youth sailing Monterey Bay, since 1999.[1]
From 1986 to 1993, he was Executive Director of Save Our Shores, based in Santa Cruz, California where he spear-headed the creation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary as Co-Chair of the Environmental Working Group. [2] [3] He also lead the effort against offshore oil drilling, including passage of 26 local ordinances in California counties and cities limiting development of onshore facilities for offshore drilling.[4][5] Mr. Haifley writes a newspaper column for the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper called "Our Ocean Backyard". In August 2011 he was given the Ocean Hero award by Save Our Shores. [6]
According to Drew Kampion's 2011 book "Jack O'Neill: It's Always Summer on the Inside," as Executive Director of O'Neill Sea Odyssey he has argued O'Neill Sea Odyssey's position that ocean concepts should be adopted in formal education standards and made more widely available to youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.[7]
